The Ram 1500 is a Model of Refined Performance with a Rugged Twist

Car companies once employed hood ornaments to not only present a recognizable symbol front and center on their vehicles (free marketing is the best marketing, after all) but also to serve as a more helpful aesthetic: these gaudy ornaments were actually a top form of early parallel parking assistance, as the bold horned creature in front of you could help stand in as a reference point to help you determine where your tires are when squeezing into a spot on the side of the road. That's a functionality that's now been taken over by an array of sensors.

For what is most likely the vast majority of drivers, the hood ornament is not sorely missed.

With the modern day comes the modern changes in technology, style, and drive, and though Ram may have retired its charging bull figurine, the aggressive Ram truck physique continues to show its namesake as one of America's most recognizable and longest-lasting pickups, in the capabilities and varieties of its 1500 truck line.

An iconic Dodge design lives on in the current Ram 1500 generation

While the Ram mascot is no longer leaping proudly and garishly from the hood, the Ram 1500 does now greet drivers and passersby with a sizable grille--taken up in no small amount by a large RAM badging on many of its models--and large lower air intakes, asserting its dominance through flash, flair, and trappings. The Ram brand has never been one to go for subtlety. But the legendary Ram 1500 is more than just its looks, capturing attention with hundreds of potential configurations based on trim level, package option, powertrain, body style, and color.

Trim levels start with an impressive range of standard models (those that you'll see MY over MY) like the Tradesman, 1500 Express, Big Horn, Rebel, Sport, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited; but it's not rare for Ram to invent special-edition, limited-run, and localized trim levels like the Ram 1500 Night (a blacked-out rig that got its degree in intimidation), the 1500 Outdoorsman (for hunters and fishermen, or those who like to think they're adventurous), the Lone Star (a Texas exclusive), and the HFE (a trim specific to the EcoDiesel engine configuration). On top of those options, you can add some of these options: Regular Cab long bed, Regular Cab short bed, Quad Cab long bed, Crew Cab short bed, and Crew Cab long bed--the short bed measures up at 5'7", the regular bed at 6'4", and the long bed at a whopping 8.0'.

But we're not done quite yet. The choices keep on going, giving you exterior color options like Red Pearl, Flame Red, Luxury Brown, Black Forest Green, True Blue, Bright Silver Metallic, Granite Crystal Metallic, Maximum Steel Metallic, Brilliant Black, Pearl White, and Bright White. If you can't find a Ram 1500 truck that fits what you're looking for, you probably don't want a truck after all.

As much diversity in performance as there is in style

Remember the ridiculous amount of choices that the Ram 1500 offers for body style/design configurations? Well, take a peek under the hood and its list of variety continues: factor in three engine options, and you begin to see why so many Utah drivers do end up choosing a 1500 when they shop for a truck. The new generation offers three engine options, including a class-exclusive (at this moment in time) 240-horsepower 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine, though this light-duty diesel is likely to be joined by competitors from Ford and Chevrolet any day now. For now, though, Ram 1500 is your only half-ton diesel option, and the fuel savings and high torque may actually make the significant price jump worth it.

More in line with classic half-ton pickup power, the Ram 1500 also offers two gas-powered engine options, a standard 305-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and a 395-horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V8. Two driveline options, rear-wheel drive (standard on most) and four-wheel drive (optional on most), as well as a smooth-talking eight-speed automatic transmission and an available air suspension, put the finishing touches on Ram 1500's capacity to tack into the thick of it with reliability. It's the pickup that performs like an SUV, but that can still work like a truck. Pretty cool.

The towing capacities of the Ram 1500 make it a competitive option

There's no reason to lie about max capacity: there are other light-duty trucks that can tow more than the Ram 1500. In fact, it's almost 200 pounds behind the leading truck. However, it can pull nearly 10,500 pounds with the right equipment on the right model, and that's typically enough for any casual truck driver. In the constant competition to be the biggest, the baddest, and the most powerful, light-duty trucks are able to pull now what heavy-duty trucks were responsible for a decade or so ago. Times are changing, and some enthusiasts admit that modern towing capacities are a little overkill for what the average hauler actually needs.

So, don't discount the Ram 1500 just because it's not the top of its class in towing. Calculate out your actual weight and GVWR needs before you hop on the bandwagon for some other truck.

Ram 1500's V6 towing capacity weighs in for lighter applications at a practical 4,170 to 7,470 pounds depending on trim, with its EcoDiesel engine option capably crushing it in fuel economy prowess while it offers some 7,750 to 8,890 pounds of capacity. Ram 1500's HEMI engine reaches the height of the pickup line, raw power offering up a tow capacity of 6,760 to 10,360 pounds.

From driveway to highway, across the job site to well off site, the Ram 1500 shows off handling designed to keep the trip a smooth one. Electric power steering comes together with a balanced suspension well-suited to just about anywhere, and an air suspension is available to help smooth out ride quality even further.

Smarter technology and a lavish interior make up for under-powered towing

You know what they say: don't judge a book by its cover. And don't judge a light-duty truck just by its towing capabilities. If you only need to tow 5,000 pounds a few times a year, you can choose a Ram 1500 truck that's loaded up with modern features, new amenities, and tons of tech options.

And drive-time comfort's a related order of the day, the pickup making a showing of soft surfaces, pleasantly textured plastics, and, in higher trims, stitched leather notes and veneers of real walnut. Relaxation on the road comes together in the convenience and utility of Ram 1500's 8.4-inch center-stack monitor, replete with large on-screen buttons and a 7-inch instrument cluster screen for easy metric readouts with eyes on the road and hands at ten and two. Add in large cup holders as well as cargo bins with room to spare and optional Ram Boxes integrated into the cargo bed, and the workhorse easily transforms into the makings of a mobile office.

It goes without saying that the Ram 1500 is an experience unto itself, best had from behind the wheel. Facts and figures are important, and interested drivers are certainly encouraged to explore specs, capacities, and dimensions to make sure this model will fit their needs. But don't write off this loud and brash pickup truck until you've seen why Dodge made Ram a standalone brand in the first place.
